Working in the Securities Industry

The securities industry is a fast-paced, exciting place to begin a career. Even if you have worked in another industry or financial company, being so close to the markets at Nikko Citigroup will be different. We offer opportunities in a variety of positions and career tracks, and we do so knowing that our employees will continue to make Nikko Citigroup a great place to work. In addition to the descriptions of our business and support areas on other pages, below is a summary of the types of roles available at a securities firm like ours.

Trading
In the fast pace of the trading floor, you will be involved in decisions to buy or sell, quote a price, or hedge a position. In both Fixed Income and or Equities you will have the latest technology and a broad array of market data at your fingertips. Each day you will be faced with many decisions, and you will often see the results immediately! As a trader, you will be watching the markets closely, responding to requests from salespeople for bids, offers, and executions. As you build experience, you will have opportunities to trade sophisticated products tailor-made for our clients’ needs. You will be operating in one of the most highly regulated industries and be on the front lines, ensuring the firm’s compliance with rules and regulations. You will be increasingly responsible for the most efficient use of the firm’s capital and you will directly contribute to the firm’s revenue and bottom line. If you like to be part of the markets, Trading is for you.

Sales
As a salesperson, you will cover a number of clients and build relationships based on trust and the overall reputation of the firm. You will be responsible to know your clients’ needs, from the type of sales coverage to the products which are appropriate for their investment strategy. Ultimately you will grow and maintain the strong relationships we have with clients throughout Japan and around the world. Nikko Citigroup has deep relationships with thousands of institutions in Japan, as well as thousands more in the international arena. As someone new to the securities markets, after training you may start covering several clients, and as your experience and reputation grow, so will your portfolio of clients. If you would like to represent Nikko Citigroup us with our valued clients, a position in Sales is a great place to start.

Investment Banking
This is where deals are made, and transactions are completed to fulfill our clients’ needs. Investment bankers work in an exciting world in which deals can be struck in hours or over several years – and everything in between. Our clients rely on the expertise of our team for capital raising – from equity and bond issuance to the most sophisticated structured transactions tailored to meet specific needs. Nikko Citigroup also provides advice on mergers and acquisitions (M & A), leveraged buyouts (LBOs), financial restructuring, and privatization, and sometimes entire companies trade hands under the guidance of our bankers. As someone new to the investment banking world, you might begin with training to help you with analysis of financial statements, legal documents, and business plans that become the foundation for transactions, together with the strong relationships Nikko Citigroup has with our clients. As your experience grows, you will become increasingly responsible for client relationships, as well as the structuring, arranging, and execution of transactions that, until now, you may have only read about on the pages of the financial news. With our creed, “Local Depth, Global Reach”, we are in a unique position to raise cross-border, multi-currency capital in all markets. To be a part of it, join our Investment Banking team.

Research
Nikko Citigroup offers our clients insights on companies, sectors, markets, interest rates, currencies, etc. Our research is renowned for its coverage depth, and every day clients seek out our analysts and research products to help make critical investment decisions. Whether in Equity Research or Fixed Income Research, we train our analysts to be able to express their viewpoints using the latest data and tools available, and even the newest analysts begin publishing early in their careers. Analysts not only do research and write reports – they have regular contact with clients, company management, and the media, as well as their global counterparts to discuss trends in their sectors and markets. In addition, quantitative analysts and data experts perform analysis on the markets from a unique perspective, using the most sophisticated models and technology. Our production teams review report content and format reports for publishing in both electronic and printed forms. The results are clear from our strong rankings in various surveys. If you would like to join one of the strongest research teams in the industry, join us.
